CASA SOLO Arquitectos, teaming up with the architectural firms RAFAEL DE LA-HOZ and MUNTO, and the engineering firms PHI PARTNERS and EINESA, we have been finalists in the competition for the New Campus Salud Girona.
The construction of the new Hospital of the Health Campus of the Girona Health Region will be an opportunity to promote the development of a first level health pole, and to deploy a strategy, management and “engine” facilities that will allow the crystallization of the future Health Innovation District of Salt-Girona. Consequently, the strategic decision was taken to integrate the faculties of health sciences of the University of Girona and the new HUB of facilities designed to generate economic activity.

Our proposal for the new Girona Health Campus proposes a sustainable and highly integrated urban implantation with the environment. The strategy focuses on urban permeability, guaranteeing the continuity of the road and pedestrian connections through the partial undergrounding of Avenida de la Paz, which functionally unifies the campus. The entrances to the different services are placed on the perimeter to free the interior of the campus from vehicular traffic and use it for pedestrians, bicycles and natural spaces.
The proposal focuses on compactness to reduce the ecological footprint, minimize the heat island effect and free up space for green areas. The public space, organized longitudinally, acts as a backbone that connects the different uses through squares, gardens and meeting areas, promoting accessibility and coexistence. The buildings are projected at a higher level for safety and flooding reasons, creating a green barrier next to the stream.

In terms of urban integration, the building adopts a fragmented volumetry that dialogues with the scale of the neighborhood and adapts to the context. The orientation and size of the courtyards ensure optimal sunlight in all spaces, including the areas below ground level. The new hospital, located opposite the existing campus, forms a healthcare superblock that clearly connects the Parc Sanitari Martí i Julià with the new complex. To the west, a knowledge hub is created that articulates the relationship between the university, the technological spaces and the hospital’s teaching program.
Finally, the proposal reinforces the relationship with the Santa Caterina Hospital by partially emptying the first floor to give continuity to an urban axis that becomes the guiding thread of the entire campus, structured with green spaces and a therapeutic garden. The aim is for the entire complex to function as a single coherent campus, continuously connected and oriented towards wellbeing and sustainable mobility.
We must congratulate all those involved in the development of the proposal for their effort and high degree of commitment.
