Bernat Gato, on behalf of CASA SOLO, has participated in the event held at the Auditori Municipal de Vilafranca del Penedès to commemorate the 30th anniversary of the Hospital, with the conference “L’Hospital Comarcal de l’Alt Penedès: un referent del nou model català d’arquitectura sanitària” (The Regional Hospital of the Alt Penedès: a reference of the new Catalan model of health architecture).
The Hospital, designed by Francesc Pernas in 1988, is one of the best examples of what was called the new model of Catalan healthcare architecture. It is a building strongly rooted in its context, both physical and socio-cultural, which includes numerous criteria of friendly and person-centered design, issues that are so much talked about today but that were already taken into account by a generation of architects strongly involved in the improvement of health infrastructures.
The hospital, with a strongly horizontal structure, established an innovative model of organization, with the Hospitalization Units in contact with the ground, with numerous green outdoor spaces with access for users and workers, and with an innovative structure of large spans that shapes the architectural scheme of the building and gives the whole an enormous modularity and versatility.
In addition to the project and management of the initial works, CASA SOLO has been involved in various subsequent renovation and expansion projects, such as the expansion of Outpatient and Day Hospital (2010), new CLI Laboratory (2010), reform of the ICU, Emergency and Delivery Unit (2012), new Dialysis and Teaching building (2024) and reform of Rehabilitation and Endoscopy Unit (2024).

We would like to thank the Consorci Sanitari de l’Alt Penedès Garraf (CSAPG) for their invitation to join them on such an important date.
