The team formed by CASA SOLO Arquitectos and estudio González arquitectos has been a finalist in the competition of the new Health Center Raval in Barcelona, promoted by Infraestructures.cat
The project strategy maintains half of the historic church by establishing a dialogue between eras (1581-2020). This follows the logic of preserving some of the existing archaeological remains on the site. Half of the church would be analysed archaeologically while the other half would remain intact for history.
The axis of symmetry of the main ward serves as a cutting plane to delimit the pre-existence of the Capella de la Misericòrdia to be preserved. This axis is materialized in a glass wall that reflects half of the preserved church, so that the whole of the ward is still virtually visible.
It is a conceptual approach, but also functional and bioclimatic. The glass wall makes the church void a bioclimatic atrium that improves the energy performance of the whole. On the other hand, it facilitates the execution, allows to organize the program in a functional way while generating a beautiful and sustainable space.
Maintaining half a church requires a balance between heritage conservation and new intervention. The functional program is located in the other half of the site, generating a technological, efficient and compact building with low energy consumption.
