New investigation building of VHIR and reordinance of the Vall d’Hebron Campus

Location: Barcelona, SpainDate: 2017 Surface: 25.170 m2 Collaborator: Josep Llinàs Promoter: Vall d’Hebron Institut de Recerca Foundation (VHIR)

Proposal for the extension and reordinance of the Vall d’Hebron Campus. Regarding the hospital Campus area, it takes special importance the integrity of the park and its natural attributes, now represented by the large mass of existing trees, by restoring the original topography.

Other considerations taken into account are the minimum occupation of the soil, occupying the already constructed soil, preserving the natural space and conserving to the maximum the existing trees.

Regarding the approach of the new building of the Foundation of the University Hospital Vall d’Hebron (VHIR), the proposal is based on the reconstruction of the “original topography”, placing a construction of three floors in which open courtyards are formalized more as geographic than constructive elements.

The program is structured in three parts related to the three types of buildings marked by the section: parking and operating rooms, laboratories and teaching, rest and relationship areas.

From these three parts the formal singularity is reserved for the one that emerges and is above the height of the new topography, opting for an orthogonal solution, accompanied by the minimum willingness to occupy the “natural” terrain.
