The expansion of Torrecardenas Hospital is proposed as a new block within the hospital plot, in its northwest area.
It is a new clear volume, aligned with the west façade of the new maternal and child hospital. This is intended to give a volumetric continuity and order and that the new block is distinguishable, that it is endowed with a certain autonomy, while recognizable within the whole of the current centre.
Its location in the northern part of the complex and with higher buildings in the south and east makes it a rather dark plot with the exception of its west facade, in which we locate the most public spaces and waiting rooms. This west façade is the most sensitive to sun protection and that is why it has been given a very special character that gives it a character of architectural distinction with respect to the rest of the buildings of the hospital complex.
In the North area a large hall connected between the levels -3 and -1 connects the two entrances, the one of the plaza of the West zone of level -3 and the one of the East zone that connects externally with the main vestibule of the new maternal building -children and with the street to the North of the plot. To enhance this permeability of this hall and give it a powerful architectural character are some escalators and a double space illuminated by a large skylight located next to the East access floor -1.
One of the bets of this volume is that the new block is as low as possible, of only three heights on the street and the urbanization of the plot. In this way, a better integration is achieved within the built set of the existing hospital, without competing in height with the other volumes of the Hospital and giving it a more human scale.
