Recently the resolution of the final phase of the competition of remodelling and extension of Laredo Hospital has been published, after which we have been winners the team of CASA SOLO ARCHITECTS.
The proposal presented for this competition, whose promoter is the Cantabrian Health Service (SCS), proposes the remodelling of an Intermediate Care Unit through the URCE (Recovery and Special Care Unit) model and the renovation of the Surgical-Obstetric Block of the Hospital, along with the construction of a new sterilization service.
The proposal focuses on the construction of two new floors on the existing emergency service, an extension that at all times is perfectly connected with the existing circulations or even improves them.
The expansion of the first floor is reserved for future construction of external consultations. As it is not the object of the competition, this floor is left empty pending such future work.
The second floor contains the services of obstetrics/childbirth, URCE, sterilization and new operating rooms. The part of the operating and sterilization services is located in the extension, while the services of obstetrics and URCE are remodelled on existing parts of the building itself.
One of the premises of the proposal is the maintenance of the assistance activity during the construction and renovation process. Since it is not possible to transfer them to other centres, the permanent attention to patients in these services must be ensured through a proposal for action in successive phases, which also complies with the assistance priorities established in the functional plan based on this proposal.
At a volumetric level, the proposal proposes a prism of white colour, similar in terms of materiality to the current urgencies building, giving continuity to the image of the whole existing building. It is a new clear volume, aligned with the constructible limit resulting from the application of urban norms.
However, some elements are introduced, such as ordering windows and the use of some meshes and plant parts, to introduce details of distinction. This means that the new block is distinguishable, that it is endowed with a certain autonomy, while recognizable within the whole of the current centre.
To finish, the facades follow a full/empty compositional rhythm very similar to the existing building, based on the same type of language.
From CASA Solo we are very pleased to have been selected as the winning team of this remodelling and extension of Laredo Hospital.
As always, we continue working in the hospital architecture sector betting on the improvement of existing health centres as well as the design and construction of hospitals of the future.
