Recently the resolution of the final phase of the Sierrallana hospital expansion competition has been published, after which the CASA Solo team, together with the Cantabrian office MMiT Arquitectos, we have become winners.
The proposal presented for this competition, whose promoter is the Cantabrian Health Service (SCS), is proposed as a new block of external consultations within the hospital plot, in the northeast side.
It is a new clear volume, distinguishable and endowed with a certain autonomy, while recognizable within the whole of the current centre.
In this way, the new volume partially adapts to the architectural line of the existing hospital, especially in terms of its geometry and finishes, using the brick in red colour as a union note with the pre-existing language.
However, it also wants to show itself as a singular volume introducing new elements that give composite richness to the whole, in the same way that the volume of the audience did.
The new block proposed for the Sierrallana hospital expansion competition consists of 4 levels:
The functional program of the basement plant has consultations in the middle of its surface and local logistics in the rest. Soft plant slopes, strategically designed, allow the arrival of natural light and ventilation to this level.
On the ground floor there are located the main access, inquiries and examination rooms, together with the rehabilitation service, on the back. The two upper levels continue to hold consultations and rooms for other specialties.
The great bet of the volume is to reduce to the maximum the height of the new block, of only three plants on the street and the urbanization of the plot. In this way, a better integration is achieved within the existing set.
The transition between the new block and the hospital is shaped by an interior courtyard, conveniently designed at the landscape level, with plant species that will allow patients and staff to enjoy natural views and lighting.
From CASA Solo we are very pleased to have been selected, along with MMiT Arquitectos, as the winning team of this Sierrallana hospital expansion competition.
As always, we continue working in the hospital architecture sector betting on the improvement of existing health centres as well as the design and construction of hospitals of the future.
