The team formed by BAAS + MONEO BROCK + CASA SOLOhas been a finalist in the International competition for the desing of the new Barcelona Institute of Science and Technology BIST Headquarters.
The building is designed in two different parts: a plinth that ressembles the old barracks and houses the common spaces, giving continuity to the city, and a light volume that contains the entire program of laboratories.
Program is organized around a large atrium that is the most representative space. Four vertical cores in the corners of the atrium contain stairs, elevators and bathrooms. The main core with panoramic elevators will go up with a view of the sea, turning the ascent into a spectacle.
The covered atrium functions as a bioclimatic space and opens with large holes to double-height terraces that connect the building with the sea and the city. These terraces become relaxed work spaces and meeting places, integrated with the circulation ring on each floor.
An external perimeter terrace surrounds the workspaces, protecting them from the sun and offering open spaces connected to the outside everywhere.
On the top floor, there is a space under the greenhouse roof, that allows all kinds of activities.
